The Community Mediation Center (CMC) is a non-profit organization that provides free and low
cost mediation services to individuals and organizations in Cumberland and York County communities.
This agency uses volunteer mediators to help people find ways of resolving their differences without
going to court. CMC has served the area for over five years by providing help with disputes
involving neighbors, tenants and landlords, consumers, former husbands and wives, businesses,
and non-profit organizations. CMC also provides victim-offender conferencing in both adult
and juvenile criminal cases, and provides special services for those disputes that arise out
of cultural, age, race, and gender bias, as well as other issues of diversity. In addition,
CMC works with the Maine Community Mediation Coalition to provide mediation services for consumers,
caseworkers, and service providers associated with the Maine Department of Behavioral and
Developmental Services.
History
The Community Mediation Center began in 1995 when a handful of individuals came together to develop a organization
that could serve clients involved in many types of disputes regardless of their abilities to pay. CMC has steadily grown since it was founded. It now uses the services of more than 25 volunteer mediators and handles over 100 mediation referrals per year.
