How CMC Works

  • You call us or we receive a referral from a third party.
  • We contact each party to see if each is willing to try mediation.
  • Mediators facilitate the conversation and process.
  • Mediators help with brainstorming ideas. They do not make value judgments or tell you what you should do.
  • If you make an agreement, the mediators help write that agreement in your words.
  • Even without an agreement a better understanding of each other's issues, perceptions and feelings usually develops, which can help lead to a solution to the situation later on.

Mediation is

  • Informal - no formal records are kept; any agreements or decisions made are yours
  • Confidential - except when there are allegations of abuse or imminent violence which must, by law, be reported
  • Satisfying - all sides are heard and all sides work on the solution
  • Affordable - low cost and free in most cases
  • Convenient - usually can be held in your community
  • Quick - usually a meeting can be scheduled within a few weeks if all parties are willing and ready
  • Helpful - Resolution is reached in approximately 85 percent of mediations
  • Impartial - CMC does not discriminate due to age, gender, race, religion, sexual orientation, etc.
